Friday 11 - 1200  On Ferry

On the ferry just now between South and North Island.  Sun is out once again although the wind in the channel between the two  islands is up a bit.  View absolutely beautiful, particularly coming out of Picton where is is more like a Fjiord but with blue skies and warm sun.  No Internet access but the email will go as soon as we connect up again tonight.

For a Ferry Port, Picton turned out to be lovely, after the required 5 minute walk around town we sat down for a couple of beers and enjoyed watching the deep blue waters and all the activity that was going on, ferries arriving, sightseeing tours arriving and departing, mail ferries arriving and departing, junior sail racing in things that looked more like shoe boxes with hankerchiefs but you should see them go about!  I think they gyb’d even quicker!

Mary went off for a read (or snooze?) and I decided to go for a walk along the bay - absolutely beautiful (see photos) just that it was uphill on the way back and then I missed a turning and added on another 30 minutes ..... would have been fine without those beers ........

This afternoon we’ll head north east of Wellington and then find somewhere to stay.  It isn’t usually very difficult, always motels or apartments andlast night was a reasonable hotel at just €60 for the night for both of us.  Food was good too so the whole night was less than €150, wine being about €30 of that.  An awful lot better than Australia!

Napier then over the weekend, and hopefully find a telly to watch the Australian Grand Prix on and then dander across to Auckland.  Onece there we are hoping to meet upwith another distant relation (the commom relation between us being my great, great, great grandfather, I think that’s right at least!)

Oh, Photo Gallery page to your left has at last got a bit better organised, so check there for more photos in the future.

Tuesday 23rd March - New Zealand

Well, Paddy's day has come and gone and still no updates! Well overdue at this stage ........

Today however, we ran out of luck with the weather - a trip up the Franz Josef Glacier by helicopter had to be cancelled in favour of a walk to the base of it in the rain, photos to follow but don't expect too much! I have to check, but I think my Granny did the same trip some fifty years ago!  On the way up there was a sign for where the glacier was in 1750, I wonder where it was in 1960.

We've been here in New Zealand for a week now, the first couple of days were in Christchurch (where Paddy's day was celebrated but mostly in the pubs), then Akaroa, a French influenced town about 100k's from Christchurch, Lake Tekapo and then here at the Glaciers.  Photos (here) give an idea of how beatiful these places were.

Our onward trip to South America has been somewhat changed by the recent earthquake in Chile and instead of spending a few days there, we will pass straight through to Buenos Aires.  We will then spend a couple more days in Peru with about five days in a paddle boat on the Amazon.

The best way to show what we have been up to is our photos, so I will spend some time now bringing them up to date ... see here:
